This week students will continue to review and build on the skills they learned in second grade.
In math students will continue to develop their understanding of place value - specifically emphasizing place (ones, tens, hundreds etc), digits (0-9), value (7 vs 70 vs 700), as well as focusing on greater than, less than. Students will be given real world scenarios and examples of why rounding is important. This week the students will also have the opportunity to visit the library and learn about this year's bluebonnet books with our amazing librarian, Mrs. Letendre. In Reader's Workshop students will practice selecting books that are based on interest. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect on the emotions and connections they make as readers to their books. In Writer's Workshop students will explore nouns and the importance of a variety of types of nouns. Students will learn the difference between common nouns and proper nouns, emphasizing the importance of capitalization of proper nouns. Students will also learn how to pluralize a variety of nouns including using -s, -es, -ies, -ves, and irregular nouns. The week will end with a nouns assessment to evaluate what they have learned this week. Students will also be given the opportunity to demonstrate their writing ability by completing their first "on-demand" writing assignment that will generate a baseline of where they are for the year. In Social Studies students will expand their knowledge of community and explore a variety of ways to be a good citizen. Students will have the opportunity to review a variety of sources and reflect on how these different articles portray citizenship. Students will focus on the essential question: What are ways to classify matter. This THURSDAY is Parent Orientation beginning at 7:00 PM in the cafeteria, and continuing from 7:30-8:00 in our classroom. I hope to see everyone there!

This week is exciting because students will begin using their planners. We will begin the week by continuing to review rules, routines and procedures.
Students will be focusing on Place Value this week. We will review ways to represent numbers: through expanded form, word or written form, as well as by using our base ten blocks. Students will end the week with a review of the number line. During writing students will be encouraged to write using complete sentences. We will also discuss the importance of restating the question when answering a prompt. Students will be given the opportunity to show off through writing about what a crazy first day of school could be like. During reading we are continuing to build stamina. It is my hope that students will be able to read - silently, understanding what they are reading and using a variety of reading and comprehension strategies - for 30 minutes. Once students achieve this goal they will be able to spread out and sit around the room during reading time! We will also continue to focus on growth mindset - having a positive outlook on challenges and acknowledging out limitations. In science students will be focusing on the scientific method as well as the importance of being safe as a scientist. Students will set up their science journals and be given the opportunity to make predictions as well as observe through actively participating in a hands on experiment. |
